cover for the entrance of a gongkhang
wool, painted silk and textile
Bhutan, ca. 1950
size: 73 x 126 cm.
Amazing cover for a (small) door to the secret room, dedicated to the very fierce protective deities.
Curling intestines, with hanging lungs, hearts, and eyes; on the textile strips painted human heads in various stages of decomposition. A wonderful visual rendering of the pure Tibetan tantric visionary nightmare!
The weaving in the four panels is typical for Bhutan.
