Dipankara Buddha
painted wood
Nepal (Kathmandu Valley), 17th cent.
high: 55 cm.
Dipankara is one of the Buddhas of the Past. He especially had a huge popularity in Nepal, where he was traditionally depicted as a standing figure, with a crown and long and heavy garments.
Most of the known statues are made of metal, but wooden figures like this ones are known. The paint is from later date, probably 19th cent.
Carved in one piece, only the lower arms and hands were carved separately.
